Guitar - Easy to Learn - Truth Or Fiction?

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Ok, this all depends on the angle that you decide to look at it. For the people that are naturally music inclined, it would be easy. But for those that are not, it might not be so easy. Despite this difference, guitar is really not as easy or as hard as people may think.

Think back to the day that you came across a guitar for the first time, what went through your mind? Bet it was something like, “boy! Is that a cool instrument or what?” Regardless what you thought, guitar playing is what it is.

If one takes it as being difficult, then that is exactly what it is going to be. But if they take it as being easy, then that is what it will be. To take this a step further, let us look at the two separately.

Guitar is Difficult

The one surprising thing that you might come across, if you have not already, is the fact that some people want to learn guitar without having to deal with everything that comes with it. Things like learning tabs, chords, notes, the fret board, practice techniques and the list goes on.

Learning Tabs

If you want to play the guitar but don’t want to learn to read guitar music, it would be wise to know your tabs. After all, how do you expect to know what you are doing on your guitar if you can’t read tabs.

Chords and Notes

Then there are the rare few that think they can magically skip learning or knowing the chords and notes. How can one play the guitar if they do not know what A flat (Ab ) or A sharp (A#) are. Playing the guitar is not a magic trick, hence it deserves it due diligence.

Fret Board

Now tell me, who has ever heard of playing the guitar without the fret board? No one I bet, unless there is a guitar out there that has no fret board then I guess that the people that are avoiding learning their frets have a big chance of learning guitar the easy way.

Practice and Practice Methods

Each and every person knows that practice is one of the requirements for improving at anything. You can’t expect to get better at playing the guitar by simply looking at the instrument days on end. That just won’t cut it. You need to do your part as a guitar player.

Guitar is Easy

If you are nothing like the guys in the above scenarios, then you have nothing to worry about. By the way, the things mentioned above are not the only things that are needed to learn the guitar, there are many more.

The only thing that you need to be armed with is the desire to put in all the effort and learn some or all the cardinal things needed to be a guitar player. Then and only then will you be closer to having the guitar easy to learn.

What kind I should buy, where to buy it, and how much to pay for it. Think online for the greatest part of your information hunting.

There are so many different guitars out there like: electric, bass, acoustic, steel, and many others. Sounds like it could be hard, but it isn’t. You have to know what you are looking for before you start your search for your first electric guitar.

Since you are a beginner and you want to become your own Guitar Hero, you should probably choose a reputable company. The reason being is since you are just beginning, you don’t want to start out experiencing with a bad guitar. Some of the good brands are:

Ibanez, Gibson, Fender, Yamaha, Taylor, and Martin.

Now that we know what brand and model of electric guitar to buy, the thing left to do is figure out how much we are willing to pay for it. You can get a fairly good electric guitar for somewhere between $200 and $500, so spend as much as you can afford. You will need a good electric guitar if you want to experience a good playing guitar. Too much of a blunt statement, but true.

Now, you can probably get your electric guitar cheaper online than you can by going to your music store in town. However, the good thing about the local music store is you can go in and try out most of the equipment right there. Even ask questions if you need to. One suggestion would be to try out your electric guitar at your music store, then go back home and shop online for what you want. Ebay and Amazon sound like a good place to start. Happy hunting, bidding, and Rock On!

The Foundation of a Band, The Acoustic Bass Guitar

Friday, August 29th, 2008

It seems a little backwards, but the acoustic bass guitar was not created until quite a few years after the electric bass guitar. The reasoning was that if there could be an electric bass guitar, why couldn’t there be an acoustic bass guitar? That would be better suited for playing alongside the acoustic guitar, just as the electric bass guitar would be more suited to playing alongside the electric guitar. One might question why that instrument was not created sooner; the answer to this could easily be that there just wasn’t any real need for it before.

This new instrument is made with a hollow body instead of a solid one and is a little larger in size. Some of these will have frets, just like the acoustic guitar, but some don’t have them and it usually only has four strings, though there are some that have more strings. It is lower, so it can be difficult to hear. This is why they will often have to be played while using pickups, this way it can be heard above the other instruments it is being played with.

The pickups are what amplify the sound from the instrument. The acoustic bass guitar was first created in the 1960s and has been in use ever since. It may not exactly be growing fast in popularity, but it does suit a purpose and is used when it is most appropriate. In much of modern music, the two kinds of electric guitars are more often used, but some genres of music still call for the acoustic variety. It is possibly in these genres where the acoustic bass guitar will find more use. It may be a younger instrument, but there is still a lot of room for it. The sound is sometimes preferred and so this variety is the one that is being picked up more and more.

This innovative musical instrument is not often the first choice of young and new musicians, but it is one that a few might pick up later on, because it can be very useful. Again, the genre of music and its demands will often determine whether the instrument will be used or not, but personal choice will also determine this. New music is being written all the time for all genres and some of that will surely have space for the newer instruments in an exclusive fashion.

As music continues to change and more is written, the new guitars will probably continue to find more parts to play. There are many people who prefer the warmer and more natural sound of the acoustic guitar and will make use of the acoustic bass. Let us hope that these innovative musical instruments will continue to enthrall music lovers all over the world.

Schoenberg - The Great-Grandfather of Rap?

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Rap music has been around longer than we thought. In the arts everything is recycled(many times stolen and recycled). We have had bell bottoms make a return in fashion, the bringing back of muscle cars on the road, big haired metal bands making come backs in concerts and neo-soul music which is…new soul music. Of course many would say Hip hop music started in the boogie down Bronx in the 70’s but the style or monotonous melody delivery may have been grand fathered even further back. The likes of social movement group such as the The Last Poets rhythmic vocals precedes the combining of lyrics over DJ breaks by delivering a lyrical flow to the beat of an ethnic drum. The style which resembles closely the Def Jam Poetry series or other earlier African American poets is not far off the beat of rap.

Years ago rap music was considered a fad to vanish like the cabbage patch kids. The genre of rap music has thoroughly spread out through to the entire world and not only reaches, but affects and relates to every culture. Many cultures histories are connected and deeply rooted in some influence of music, and the gap may be bridged closer.

As a graduate from the University of Southern California growing up in Long Island, NY I was a product of the renaissance age of rap music. I grew up along side many earlier influential names of hip hop rap icons such as Rakim, Groove B Chill and Sweety G. My own interest and love for music ironically (cause that’s a whole ‘nother saga explained in the future)lead me to study music at U.S.C. as an undergrad taking a few classes in jazz and classical music history. I once had a debate with a professor and chairman of the Jazz studies program who refuses to believe and admit that rap is music. On the other side in classical history, I had just learned that Schoenberg’s “Sprechmelodies” or Sprechgesang, similar to a monotonous chant flow in which there was no present melody just like that of rap. This style of music dates back to the early 1900’s and is thoroughly supported to be music so much it was kept record of, appreciated and taught throughout out the years.

It is always said “to know where you are going, you must know where you are from.” History serves as a blueprint that has been forged for us to learn from.”… “When I work with my clients, I like to give them a bigger picture of what entertainment arts represents in all of its science and artistic perspective. As I work with 15 year New York Asian teen artist Element 5 (E5), I dig a little bit into her history and navigate how her own past connects with the present state of entertainment now. I provide her with the evolution of entertainment and music history so she can see the direction we are heading while observing the past. Music and the biz is ever-changing in a cyclic loop.” Does this mean that Germany is the birthplace of rap music? Not quite but it puts an end to the debate for historians. In a world in which music is a huge part of everyone’s life, many cultures are influenced and incorporate rap into their own native language and music. Billions of profitable dollars have been earned from rap, it is not only grandfathered in as a style of music to last, but worthy of and honorary degree in which the success of hip hop can now afford to buy.
